The NFL doubles down

I suspect the NFL is eventually going to regret signing up for more Goodell:
The Commissioner finally has a new contract. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL’s Compensation Committee has informed all owners that a new contract for Commissioner Roger Goodell has been executed.

The memorandum to all owners explains that a “binding contract extension has been signed by the Commissioner and by Arthur Blank, on behalf of the League entities.” The memo also cites the existence of a “nearly unanimous consensus” among the owners in favor of finalizing the extension now.
The answer to problems caused by SJW is always more SJW.

Looks like my boycott watching NFL games will continue for a long time. Might as well get out of fantasy football leagues next year too.

Blogger James Dixon December 06, 2017 4:26 PM

I suspect the league will be reassessing matters after they fully digest the television numbers, Superbowl figures, licensed sales, and next year's season ticket sales. Especially when the television numbers don't improve next year. But by that point it's too late. I wonder what his buyout will be.

Anonymous FP December 06, 2017 4:26 PM

Nearly unanimous, a close consensus, mostly united, just a few fries short of a happy meal. The NFL is good with Goodell. Nearly.

Blogger Dave December 06, 2017 4:26 PM

I certainly hope they throw in lifetime healthcare coverage for Goodell and family. I couldn't bear the thought of Roger being forced to provide for his own family's health insurance out of his meager salary. $40-50M per year just doesn't stretch as far as it used to.

I'm going to miss watching the NFL but sacrifices have to be made for the cause of social justice.

I think this marks the point of absolute total departure from "regular guy" world. In that world when you don't perform, you get fired or at least you don't get your gig extended. By what rational metric has Goodell been anything but an abject failure? The league suffers today in every category. Popularity down, attendance down, ratings down, nationwide fan boycotts, grumbling advertisers, grumbling in many team offices. And they give that schlub an attaboy. Regular guys are bound to see this as just another insider elite deal in realm that keeps them locked out, and ever more openly despises them.

@10 - A quick look at the state of most NFL teams would indicate most owners are too good at making decisions. Re-casting their lot with good deal is a desperate throw of the dice because they believe he can "turn things around", and if he doesn't, their in serious trouble.

Historic losses in viewership, attendance, and sales. Plenty of examples of other companies being destroyed by SJW convergence. The customers have clearly stated why. So, of course, the NFL doubles down by extending Goodell as well as establishing a 100 million dollar SJW slush fund.

Bring back the USFL.

Blogger DSW December 06, 2017 6:19 PM

Arthur Blank, the head of the compensation committee, is a liberal Dimocrat who was a big time Crooked Cankles supporter. He locked arms with players before a game after Trump blasted the league. Of course he's an SJW and he's doubling down. Now attendance is dropping at that beautiful new stadium he built in Atlanta.

Blogger Gordon December 06, 2017 6:22 PM

Most of these guys got where they are by being serious and hard nosed. Of course, once you are an NFL owner, man, you are in the tall grass. Powerful people sniff your butt for a couple of tickets or a suite invitation. League meetings have to be like that scene from Godfather III where they're around that huge table in the penthouse. Heady, heady.

And some of those guys, like the Wilfs (Vikings) are pretty common. I mean, the Wilfs were apartment house owners. Now they're in the plushest suite in the building.

And apparently this makes you stupid. Turkeys, indeed. No one in that meeting has been around long enough to remember when franchises failed. None have, since Rozelle brought home the big money. But times can change.

"I'd like to thank Don Mara for arranging this meeting in his territory...."

Then they still don't have the right answer...which is to replace Goodell with Kaepernick.

Just look at all the awards he's earned recently...obviously, he is a man of ability and integrity who brings much exposure to the league.

Anonymous Wide Receiver December 06, 2017 7:08 PM

LOL. I really hope Trump DOES bring back the USFL. The NFL is a corrupt monopoly anyway.

Meanwhile, what IDIOTS the owners are. Haven't they heard the Kenny Rogers song? You gotta know when to fold 'em. And these egomaniacs can't do it. They've fallen into the same trap the players fell into. The protests were petering out but they took a knee anyway to protest Trump telling them what to do. Stupidly draping Trump in the American flag in the process. Now the owners are doing the same thing. "Trump doesn't get to tell us who the Commissioner is. And neither does Jerry Jones. So harrumph."

Way to cut off your nose to spite your face guys!

This in itself is another victory for the God Emperor.

Football fans wanted Roger fired. AGAIN the owners disappoint the fans in a blustery and failed attempt to spite the God Emperor.

I've been thinking a professional men's volleyball, and professional women's volleyball, might have success in the future. Teams can be small, so they can travel cheaply, and games aren't so physically demanding so you can have a lot of traveling exhibitions to get things started.

It uses a lot of the same physical skillsets as basketball, but with nothing that allows the thug-life mentality, and no mixing of players on the court.

It is actually enjoyable to watch female volleyball players, and they can look attractive when playing, compared to say, the WNBA. Male volleyball players are tall, athletic, can jump like crazy, and hit the ball hard enough to shock the audience.

Plus, it is very much a team game. If you don't have good teamwork, you can't succeed in volleyball. Takes away the gorilla-ball aspect and the me-firsts of so many other professional sports.

Tipsy @15: "I was listening to someone talk about the violence in the Steelers Bengals game; he described it as gang violence. Was that a fair description? Does it portend a cultural shift in the way football is played?"

Not IMO; that was typical intra-divisional rivalry stuff, and more personal than team-based (as was Gronk's hit). There's always been this kind of individual dirty play (for which Suh used to be notorious)...though it was even worse, in Ye Olden Dayz.

Blogger YIH December 06, 2017 7:32 PM

Hopefully the owners have put in some sort of performance clause in the contract. For example, if the Super Bowl slumps to a rating of under 40 (worst since '72) or a share of under 60 (lowest ever).
Unlike baseball, the NFL still sees itself as the pro sports king, so it's going to take a lot more fan punishment (declining attendance/TV ratings) to wake the owners up.
One issue is the economics of the NFL have changed, due to the salary cap all the teams are at least marginally profitable, and the cap can be adjusted down in response to declining revenues. Which means players and owners won't feel any pain in the wallet for several years (merch sales such as jerseys are meaningless, those pay whole league expenses such as ref salaries with the leftover going to NFL Charities).
So unless the Super Bowl slumps as badly as I mentioned above (which I doubt, it's too much of an institution for that) it may not be until next season that the networks really start getting concerned. The league and the networks are thinking (hoping, praying) that this will blow over, but I doubt it.
Eventually, like baseball post-'94 they will have to start wooing fans back... Good luck with that.

Ya know, I don't "watch" most any football games anymore. Except when the Saints are playing...(ie. Saints vs Falcons tomorrow nite)

NFL sucks. But, I do like playing Fantasy football. You're playing players....who cares if the team they are on loses?

It's all about the player(s) on your roster, (and, on your bench), who score for you or not.

For example: I have Julio Jones and Alvin Kamara.

I'm currently 3rd in the league.

Gonna watch that game.

Blogger Rough Carrigan December 06, 2017 9:30 PM

Goodell's daddy was a fill in RINO senator. Roger's living the RINO dream. He's incompetent and he's totally given in to SJW stupidity but instead of being quickly fired he's getting a contract extension.

Anonymous Hoss December 06, 2017 10:15 PM

I can't believe some enterprising group of black guys hasn't tried to capitalize on the dumpster fire that is the NFL and all the white-guilt that comes with it. You know Goodell is positively squirming with excitement at the thought of having a majority/all share team owned by black folks, and I'm betting they could get an expansion team at rock-bottom price if they just started applying the right kind of pressure. Easy as pie.

"So the NFL owners really do have a death wish...Freud would be proud."

That's what's really maddening about all this (no offense to coach Madden)... the owners won't feel the effects of their SJW decisions because we now know that the Pentagon shovels scores of millions into their bank accounts and calls it "Funding for Tributes to the Troops."

I predict what will happen next is that the NFL will start shuffling fans into certain parts of the stadiums only, and then tarp all the empty sections and only let the cameras pan to the sections with the fans, along with other similar shenanigans. Kind of like what Vince McMahon now does with his mostly empty arenas for WWE SmackDown and Raw shows.

It should be years of comedy at least.

"Once Brady retires I'm out."

This is a good point.

Wait until Roethlisberger retires and the Steelers try to replace him with a token affirmative action case and the 4-12 seasons start rolling in.

40% of what's left of the League's fans will walk.

That may be a blow that not even the Pentagon can save them from.

It's not about SJW convergence. It's about a product that is going through rough times for a host of factors. Professional sports have had their cycles of booms and busts. There is more than likely going to be a strike in the NFL after the collective bargaining agreement ends. It may be protracted. It may be damaging.

But, in the end, men and women love their NFL franchise. They will watch, attend games and play fantasy. Feel free to chose not to do those things anymore.
